Solar Panel Removal & Reinstall for Re-Roofing
Electrical detach and reset so your roofer can work.
Move the Array, Replace the Roof, Put It Back
A roof does not last as long as the panels bolted to it, so sooner or later the array has to come off while shingles or metal are replaced. Roofers handle the roof. The wiring, the shutdown and the reconnection belong to an electrician. Our master electrician licensed in Wisconsin and Minnesota, who has solar industry experience, takes that part off your plate.
We work alongside your roofing contractor so neither trade waits on the other. You get one plan covering when power goes down, when panels come off, when the roof gets done and when the system returns to service. Our crew arrives with the documentation done and a dated plan, so the roofer sees exactly when the roof will be clear.
What's Included
- Pre-removal photos and system documentation
- Production readings before shutdown
- Safe, labeled shutdown of AC and DC sides
- Careful panel and wiring detachment
- Storage guidance during the roof job
- Reinstall coordinated with the roofer
- Re-commissioning and output testing
- Rapid shutdown verification, NEC 690.12
- Inspection and utility notice where required
One Plan for Both Trades
Before the roofing crew arrives, we agree on dates, who handles racking and flashing, and where panels wait. Written down, that plan keeps the roof schedule from slipping because of a wire nobody owned, and it shortens the time your system sits offline.

Documenting the Array First
Before anything is unplugged, we record how the system is built. That means photographs of the roof layout, string wiring, labels, combiner, disconnects and inverter, plus the production readings and any fault history. These records let us put every module back where it was and show later that performance after the job matches performance before. If an old installer left no drawings, ours become the drawings.
Shutting Down Safely
Solar modules make voltage whenever light hits them, so shutdown is not as simple as flipping one breaker. We open the AC disconnect, power down the inverter, isolate the DC strings and confirm with a meter that the circuits are dead where we will work. Panels are covered or removed in an order that keeps live conductors from dangling. Rapid shutdown equipment under NEC 690.12 is part of that sequence, and we note its condition for reinstall.
Storage, Reinstall and Re-Commissioning
Modules are heavy, edged in aluminum and easy to crack, so they need flat, padded, dry storage out of the work zone. Once the new roof is done and racking is mounted, panels go back, wiring is restored with listed connectors and every string is tested. We then restart the inverter, confirm the monitoring app reports and compare output to our starting readings. Anything that does not match gets traced before we call it finished.
Permits, Inspection and Your Utility
Some jurisdictions want an electrical permit or inspection for the disconnect and reconnect, and some utilities want notice when an interconnected system goes offline and returns. We find out what applies in your area and handle the paperwork. Roof structure and flashing remain the roofer's responsibility under the local building rules. If a permit is needed, it is in hand before the first panel is touched, so the job is never paused midstream for paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my roofer just remove the solar panels?
Roofers can lift modules, but the wiring and shutdown are electrical work. A licensed electrician should de-energize the system and reconnect and test it afterward so the array returns to service correctly.
How long will my system be offline?
That depends on the roof job. The electrical side is usually short at each end, with the panels offline for the days or weeks the roofing needs. We coordinate dates with your roofer to keep it tight.
Will my panels be damaged during removal?
Careful handling keeps risk low. We document condition beforehand, remove panels in sequence and store them flat and padded. After reinstall we test each string, so any problem shows up right away.
Do I need to tell my utility?
Often, yes, when an interconnected system is taken out of service and returned. We check your utility's rules and file any notice needed so reconnection does not run into a surprise.
Will an inspector need to look at the reinstall?
Possibly, depending on your local jurisdiction. We confirm requirements before work starts, pull a permit where one applies and schedule any inspection. Many places treat a simple disconnect and reconnect differently from a new install, and we know which applies.
How much notice do you need before the roofer comes?
Call (608) 871-1379 as soon as your roof date is set so we can fit the electrical work around it. Free estimates are available, and early notice helps us match your roofer's timeline.
